Chapter 3 is the third chapter of Yuki Suetsugu's Chihayafuru.
Quick Summary[]
At the Shiranami Karuta Society, Taichi, Chihaya and Arata meet Hideo Harada and Hyoro-kun. Harada-sensei is excited to have new students join his club. The three have a group match against some of the club members. Chihaya's exceptional hearing ability is discovered.
Long Summary[]
Chihaya, Taichi and Arata enter Shiranami Karuta Society and interrupt their practice. The people practicing ask them to stay in a corner. Chihaya observes the players and realizes that Karuta is not merely a game but a sport.
After practice, Harada-sensei, the head of the Shiranami Karuta Society, welcomes the 3 Junior High Schoolers into the Karuta society. He then introduces them to Hyoro-kun, a Karuta player the same age as them. Hyoro-kun, however, brags about his skill, saying they can't beat him. Chihaya feels annoyed, so she challenges Hyoro-kun and his friends to play a 3 vs. 3 Genpei style match.
During the memorization time of the match, Arata coms up with a simple strategy. Chihaya is assigned to take one-syllable cards, Taichi is assigned to take multi-syllable cards, while Arata takes the rest. They then begin the match.
The first card read is a one-syllable card. However, Arata takes it, telling Chihaya, "Because you're too slow." He does the same thing to Taichi. The two of them are really annoyed and begin treating Arata as the opponent.
Chihaya begins focusing. The card read is the one syllable card Fuku karani. She takes it even before "Fu" is read. She rejoices as it was the first card she took properly. Harada-sensei, Arata and the adults are all amazed by her speed. Among all the players, Chihaya was the fastest one.
